Montshire Internship Options
Exhibit Design and Fabrication
Montshire has about 15,000 feet of exhibit space filled with interactive science exhibits. Our main audience is families, so all exhibits are designed to visitors with any level of knowledge. Exhibits cover many aspects of physical and natural science. Interns are exposed to most every aspect of exhibit production that takes place here, including research, design, production and evaluation of exhibits, installation of any scheduled travelling exhibitions, and day-to-day repair. Candidates should have a background in science, good manual skills and at least basic computer skills. Imagination, a sense of humor, and an enjoyment of problem-solving are all necessary.
Membership and Development
With over 4,000 members, Montshire has one of the largest museum member bases in northern New England. The Museum also sponsors the Montshire Associates, a corporate and business member ship program. The Montshire's development effort includes an annual fund, major gifts, and planned giving programs. Internship projects vary. Interns work directly with the director of development and membership coordinator.
Public Relations and Marketing
As Montshire continues to be recognized as an important learning center and tourist attraction in the region, public relations uses creativity and research to introduce the Museum to all potential audiences. Interns will have the chance to work in the various avenues of communications, including research and writing copy for advertisements and features. Interns may also be involved with technical aspects of the trade, including photography, desktop publishing, and graphics. Offered during summer only.
Science Education
The Montshire education department serves school groups and the public through programs at the museum, outreach, and interaction on the exhibit floor. Programs focus on natural and physical sciences and serve a wide range of ages from preschool through adult. Education interns will have the opportunity to teach science concepts to preschoolers and schoolchildren, to develop curricula and design activities
for kids and families, to interpret exhibits, to work in environmental day camps and other outdoor activities, and to assist with special events. (If you are interested in a summer internship in Science Education, please contact us as there are some important differences in the program.)
