Survey of New England Ferns

This course is geared to people with some experience with ferns who want to gain knowledge of the whole group in this region. Discussion includes an examination of photographs and frond silhouettes, and field identification techniques. 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Co-sponsored by the New England Wild Flower Society. Unraveling Dryopteris: the Wood Ferns Workshop

Participants will learn how to distinguish nine species of wood ferns native to New England, and understand their tendency to hybridize. We will identify seven species and several hybrids in the field at Hobbs Fern Sanctuary, a rich environment and biodiversity of ferns and fern allies. 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Co-sponsored by the New England Wild Flower Society. Native New England Shrubs

The many species of native New England shrubs display a wide variation in size, shape, and color. This course, instructed by Chris Mattrick, will introduce students to about fifty species growing in this region. Choose one of 3 sections: Wednesdays, Sept. 10 and 24, 6-9 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 13, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; or Sunday, Sept. 21, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. All sessions meet at the Museum.
